Short story: The blue vulture and the red snake

The blue vulture flexed its claws, still managing to hold on firmly to the thick, gnarly old branch of the great tree in which it long ago made its nest, right at the very top. Other birds had tried to make their nests on the upper branches, but over time had come to realise that the blue vulture would only tolerate their presence if they were either other vultures, or smaller birds prepared to make do with the much thinner and weaker branches right at the very bottom.
