Barbarism begins at home

Homophobia among the under-16s is alive and well in Skipton, North Yorkshire. My partner is often abused on his way to the train station to go to work. The children who call him ‘dirty queer’, ‘fucking poof’ and other verbal slurry are not always, as conventional wider-ranging prejudices would have us believe, low-intelligence, low-opportunity chavs who are themselves maligned as ’scum’ and ‘dole scroungers’ and the like. No. They are invariably white from middle-class, middle-income, perceived as nice families. My partner is powerless to defend himself because these innocents are protected by law from being smacked around the head, and he doesn’t even answer them back because he rightly fears one of the spotty little hormonally-unbalanced ferals might pull a knife on him.

Does the California gay marriage ruling mean it’s time to reconsider ‘civil partnership’ terminology in the UK?

“Limiting the designation of marriage to a union ‘between a man and a woman’ is unconstitutional and must be stricken from the statute,” said California Chief Justice Ron George in his written opinion yesterday, as California’s top court ruled a state law banning marriage between same-sex couples as unconstitutional.

The state’s Supreme Court said the “right to form a family relationship” applied to all Californians regardless of sexuality. Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger previously vetoed laws passed by the state legislature to legalise gay marriage not once, but twice.
