The war for justice and equality goes on
Many people of different sexualities have been led to believe for some time under the current government that we have achieved gay equality. We haven’t. Not only do gay men and women still run the risk of verbal and physical abuse on the street and in their families and neighbourhoods, but they are unable to simply hold hands when in public unless they are either in the back arse of beyond or happen to be walking down Compton Street in London’s Soho, where there is safety in numbers.
Legislatively, some—not all—of the battles have been won, but hearts and minds are far from universally free of bigotry and the inclination to stigmatise. The war is not over.

Ecuadorean officials are investigating the slaughter of 53 sea lions from the Galapagos Islands nature reserve, which were found with their heads caved in.
The dead animals included 13 pups, 25 youngsters, nine males and six females. The animals were left to decompose, removing any possibility they were killed for body parts. They have no natural predators and generally do not fear humans.
Sea lions are sometimes hunted for their skin, or the teeth and genitals of the male animals are removed for use as a supposed aphrodisiac in Chinese medicine (the cause of much animal suffering—think on that and consider a disclaimer if you ever advocate the use of ‘alternative’ medicine). The nineteen islands and surrounding ocean are under threat from invasive species, increased tourism and immigration. International interest in the islands, Ecuador’s most popular tourist attraction, is directly contributing to their decline—unsurprisingly.
