“It won’t have an impact,” says Cats Protection League after losing £11m

The nation’s cats can now join the queue of people already lined up to scratch out the eyes of bankers. Cats Protections League, the charity that finds homes for stray cats and provides financial assistance towards neutering and other vet bills, has announced that it has £11m invested in Icelandic banks. It claims that the money was for ‘emergencies’–like the collapse of a foreign bank, perhaps?–and for ‘long-term projects’ (whatever they might be), so its day-to-day running will be unaffected.

But while the CPL does some great work alleviating feline suffering, one has to wonder, why do charities constantly tell us they need money urgently, right now, when, clearly, if this is any example, they squirrel away millions in the banks of other countries?

Iceland’s vow to restore relations with UK doesn’t hold water

Iceland’s Prime Minister claims to be working to restore relations with Britain. Hmm. If that were true, he could start by honouring his country’s agreement with Britain to fork out the first £15,000 cash to every saver affected by the demise of Icebank, with our government making up the rest up to £50,000. The fact that Iceland’s government basically turned round when asked for the cash and told our own government to fuck off and go sing, well… It doesn’t bode well for a friendly get-together, does it? Sadly, though, Iceland is shortly going to need all the help and friends it can get—and it’s doubtful Britain will be first in the line to provide financial assistance. We’re more likely to say ’screw you’ back at them.
