Diet drinks lead to weight gain

I’ve held the opinion for years that diet drinks are worse than the sugar-laden alternatives, being wholly chemical in content and flavour, presumably becoming tasty over time only to those who valiantly persevere because they think drinking a soft drink can miraculously shed weight. I have a very low tolerance of artificial sweeteners myself, which is what started my loathing for them (indeed, I think this may have been the trigger for my developing the need to know what goes into my food). They provoke migraines and nausea, and can be found in all kinds of pretend food and drink. So I wasn’t surprised to learn that research indicates sugar-free soft drinks lead to weight gain. At least, in rats—but it’s fair to say it’s highly likely to be the case in humans, too.

Let’s make it a Happy New Year

The Wheel of the Year

The wonderful image above, depicting the Wheel of the Year, was sent to me by my friend Ruby. Thanks Ruby! And to everyone I’d like to say you have my very best wishes for 2008. I hope it is a good year for the world, the year when we finally wake up as a species to the challenges we face and start taking action.
