Automatic genre tagging in iTunes, and ‘genre boobs’

I deleted all genre tag information in my entire iTunes library today. I was simply pissed off at having over 200 mostly incorrect genres assaulting my eyes in Grid View. I’ve tried to find a decent OS X application that will search the online music databases and add genres to tracks automatically. There are lots of apps that do this for album art, and even song titles and albums. But can I find one that handles genres? Not so far!

And has anyone else noticed that one of the default genre images appearing in Grid View is seriously dodgy and shouldn’t be found in a massively popular application like iTunes, given that many children use it, and adults of varying sensibilities? There’s this photograph that appears when displaying all the genres, of a woman with her tits out. It looks like it was lifted out of a 1980s heterosexual porn magazine (the lady in question has a serious perm situation going on!).

All things to all men? Or just a music slut?

A new and, as far as this writer’s concerned, utterly useless (and frankly wrong) bit of research claims our personalities and musical tastes are closely linked. Follow the link, there’s a list provided of musical genres, alongside the personality type supposedly into them. But as I like selected pop, rock, heavy metal, soul, classical, and more… even gospel, occasionally… I guess that either means I can be all things to all men, or I’m schizophrenic. Or maybe I just don’t like being boxed in with yet more damned labels.

How about you? Can you handle Steps followed by Queen followed by Beethoven’s Fifth followed by Destiny’s Child followed by… Well. You get my point, I hope. Variety is the spice of life.
