“Yes please, we’d love you to shit on our doorsteps for the next 20,000 years!”

Just when you thought we needed no further evidence that the Labour government is entirely composed of dangerous lunatics, it is now inviting communities in the UK to volunteer to host a radioactive waste dump.

Local authorities are being urged (not told, so it’s optional) to consult widely before coming forward—which, coming from Labour, with its track record on manipulating public consultations, is like a criminal mastermind telling us all not to commit crimes—and those who do come forward may (not will) win financial support (bribes).

Government hypes up failing, poorly-funded and limited-access green grant scheme

The number of government grants made to people who want to fit solar panels or other green energy systems to their homes has halved after the low carbon buildings programme cut the maximum grant on offer from £7,500 to £2,500.

In 2007, 2,339 grants were made nationwide compared with 5,104 the previous year. Britain is the third worst performer in the EU for producing energy from renewable sources—just two per cent of the UK’s energy is produced in this way—and the share has been ordered to increase to 15% by 2020.

Biofuels: the methadone fix for civilised oil junkies?

All petrol and diesel sold at UK pumps now has to include at least 2.5% biofuels. Erroneously termed renewable fuels—because they’re not, they’re not even recycled fuels for the most part—biofuels are made from crops such as sugar cane or maize. The types of plants most commonly used do not grow in the UK, or when they are found growing in the UK, they are not grown in significant volume. The biofuel percentage requirement will rise to 5% by 2010. The government claims the enforced change will make vehicles more environmentally friendly.

My MacBook Pro came back from repair having suffered a 'logic board failure'. I don't know what that is, but it sounds serious and ghastly. Thanks to the wonderful Migration Assistant in OS X, it took me all of half an hour to get my applications, email, settings and documents back onto the machine via a FireWire link-up with the iMac. Windows was never easy in that regard.
