The battle of the wills: cat versus man

Mandrake is much better, and wants out. The battle of the wills has begun. His insistent caterwauling this morning grew ever more indignant until I decided I’d had enough and locked him in the bedroom, where he promptly settled down and went to sleep on a chair.

Yesterday was much worse. He left me a ‘present’ on the living room carpet, I know it was him, as a way of saying “fuck you, my jailor!”–with no thanks for looking after him, of course. He’s a cat. What, do you honestly think I ever expected gratitude? Gratitude from a cat only comes when they are feeling very ill. It serves a purpose, it rewards you and keeps you caring for them. When they are better you can forget it. Go suck eggs. Eat your granny. Whatever.

Jasper is poorly

I’ve got a dread notion that my idea, espoused about a month ago, that there’s an unneutered tom spreading FIV in our locality, might be true. Jasper, one of our twin two-year-old black-and-white boys, has runny eyes and is very down in the dumps right now. If he doesn’t improve over the next few days I’ll be taking him to get the FIV test at the vet’s, and if he turns out to be positive it opens up a lot of questions—one being whether we can keep all our cats in from now on. I honestly don’t think it’s possible. Some never get into clashes with other cats; some do. All are used to having the freedom to come and go as they please.
