Chicken Houdini

We have a real nuisance to deal with right now in the form of our best-feathered ex-battery hen, Galadriel. She’s much more people-friendly than the others, who are still quite skittish around us—which is understandable after their year in hell—but she’s grown her feathers back so rapidly she needs to have one of her wings clipped again.

She enjoys flying, we’ve discovered, and keeps soaring out of the generous enclosure and making straight for our fledgling fruit bushes. She is especially fond of strawberry plants as well, knowing she isn’t supposed to have them—that I shout and chase her—because she conducts high-speed raids and runs away cackling whenever she snatches a leaf. It’s funny as well as annoying.

The Chicken Hilton Hotel

The new chicken enclosure

My beloved and I have been very busy over the bank holiday weekend (our cousins across the Atlantic will, of course, wonder what a bank holiday is—it’s when you get an extra day off work for no obvious reason at various times during the year—glad we, er, cleared that one up…).

We’ve built a huge (and I do mean HUGE) new enclosure for the chooks. They still have their original run inside it, so when it’s very muddy or otherwise grim in the weather department they will always have somewhere to shelter; plus, if we’re going to be away from the house, they won’t get to free-range within their new kingdom as there’s no roof, so keeping them in the original run on such days would mean they’re as secure as they can be in our absence.
