Mandrake may have FIV or Feline Leukaemia
Mandrake, our three-legged marmalade tomcat, started being ill at the end of last week. He stopped eating and drinking, but was able to go to the toilet, and when we took him to the vet we found out he had a temperature of 104 and a distended stomach. He was given an antibiotic shot, but over the weekend his temperature did not go down and we had to resort to all manner of tactics just to encourage him to consume a few pieces of chicken—about seven in total, next to nothing, but nevertheless, strangely enjoyed even though the efforts we went to were extraordinary. Water was administered by syringe, one little mouthful at a time.
By the end of the weekend he was unable to walk, taking just a few steps before keeling over. He’s been sleeping mostly, purring loudly when fussed, and though clearly very ill he’s not appeared to be in what you might call any kind of severe pain. But it’s hard to tell.

This is the penultimate part of my blog retrospective. 2007 was the year that saw me enter my forties. Marked by a poodle for the glory of gay gods tells the story of how my mother’s pet poodle bit the doctor who turned up too late to attend my home birth. It might arguably be not only my best headline ever, but also one of the funniest personal stories I’ve ever shared online (even though I, obviously enough, have no recollection of the events as told to me by my mum).
