Thank the gods for Time Machine

Time Machine, the backup utility that comes bundled with Mac OS X, really came in handy today when I noticed that lots and lots of music files had vanished without trace from iTunes on the iMac. Some TV shows had gone, and almost the entire discography of Goldfrapp, and probably lots of other stuff I just didn’t notice as missing. It turned out I’d set an application called Synchronize Pro to sync the Home folder between the iMac and my MacBook Pro, without remembering that the Music folder is contained within it. So the application happily spent all day yesterday deleting files on the iMac that weren’t on the laptop. Aagh!

Apple’s Time Machine update may enable backup to wireless drives

If rumours are true, a free update to OS X Leopard will soon enable the Time Machine tool to wirelessly backup to a USB drive attached to the Apple Airport Extreme my beloved bought me for Christmas. This is great as I can currently backup the iMac easily, but the MacBook Pro is a lot more hassle because it has to be hooked up to another drive. Doing away with the need for cables will make backing up portables a breeze.
