Absolutely heart-breaking senseless slaughter

Ecuadorean officials are investigating the slaughter of 53 sea lions from the Galapagos Islands nature reserve, which were found with their heads caved in.
The dead animals included 13 pups, 25 youngsters, nine males and six females. The animals were left to decompose, removing any possibility they were killed for body parts. They have no natural predators and generally do not fear humans.

Sea lions are sometimes hunted for their skin, or the teeth and genitals of the male animals are removed for use as a supposed aphrodisiac in Chinese medicine (the cause of much animal suffering—think on that and consider a disclaimer if you ever advocate the use of ‘alternative’ medicine). The nineteen islands and surrounding ocean are under threat from invasive species, increased tourism and immigration. International interest in the islands, Ecuador’s most popular tourist attraction, is directly contributing to their decline—unsurprisingly.

We’ve bought their house… Now we just need the chickens!

Our new chicken house and run

We get our first four ex-battery hens through the Battery Hen Welfare Trust at the end of January or during February sometime before the end of March, whenever the next rescue collection takes place, for the sum of fifty pence each. That’s more than the supermarkets pay for birds dead at the end of miserable lives, trust me. What do you think broiler chickens cost the likes of Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s when they charge in the region of just three quid for a whole chicken?
