Update on the chickens
All the ex-battery hens now put themselves to bed at night, which means no more hysterical laughter when they give my beloved (but not me) the runaround. Hermione, the smallest of the ladies, demands a cuddle every time I open the nest-boxes. Yes, I said a cuddle. That bird has been an eye-opener. She craves affection, and gives it right back. Hyacinth, on the other hand, is a she-cockerel. All the girls are putting on weight, stretching their wings, scratching on the ground… It’s a pleasure to watch them discover a good life beyond the torture chambers…

I’ve received word that our ex-battery hens are going to be ready for collection this coming Saturday, four weeks ahead of schedule. We will likely not only have our own four to look after for a while, but another four set aside for have friends who are dealing with a family crisis right now and haven’t got the time to undertake their planned shed conversion for the birds, so they can’t pick up their four on this occasion. They’re on course to pick them up from another batch scheduled for release to the Battery Hen Welfare Trust at the end of March.
