film and video

End of another era in photography

Polaroid, the company behind the instant camera, is to stop making the film used in its iconic technology. The firm is closing factories in the US, Mexico and the Netherlands, and stopped making the instant cameras themselves about a year ago. It now focuses on other ventures which include a portable printer for mobile phone images, and Polaroid-branded digital cameras.

I rediscovered the Polaroid camera my partner bought me several years back when I was unpacking boxes after our recent move, and was contemplating offering it up on Freecycle until I read the news that the cameras and films have gone the way of cassette tapes (although cassette decks can still be bought).

Download the ‘Ashes to Ashes’ Pre-Emptive Mix

My latest buddy icon

1981 is the year in which the hugely-anticipated sequel to the BBC series Life on Mars is set. The first episode of Ashes to Ashes airs tonight on BBC1 at 9pm. Everyone’s favourite politically-incorrect copper, Gene Hunt, is back—and this time he’s in London, not Manchester. I’ve compiled a special mix of tracks, all dating back to the year of the new romantics, in anticipation of the new series and the compilation album accompanying it which will inevitably be released at some point over the coming eight weeks of eighties Brit-cop mayhem. What’s more, you can download the mix, for a limited time only. Aren’t I good to you? Yes I am.
