Two stories today that really should be set side by side in our contemplations. One, the doctor’s sick note is to be replaced by a ‘fit note’ that, rather than saying you can’t work while you recover from the flu or surgery, will instead detail the work you can do–”Mrs Jones has had her entire womb removed but she can still make dinner for her lazy husband if she takes a bit more time”, perhaps—and second, the government is placing new emphasis on tackling and preventing depression.
I doubt those who are broken by long hours and the non-existence of a work/life balance can expect anything to be done to alleviate those causes of their misery. Nor can those whose benefits or wages don’t even cover all the bills, let alone allow for the occasional indulgence of a takeaway, hold their breath for a bit more money to turn their frowns upside down.
What we will see is more pressure applied to get people back into work long before their bodies heal from surgery, and more persistent and aggressive demands placed upon those with broken minds to change themselves rather than address the corporate causes of their malaise. There’s nothing wrong with the hive—it’s the drones, stupid.
