Araucanas on the way!

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

We get two more hens this week, both fantastically strange-looking and sideburn-endowed Lavender Araucanas. This brings our total to 10 birds. Chickens are addictive!

I did a google images hunt for Lavender Araucanas and saw many different birds … will just have to wait and see what yours look like :o) Will this be it, for this year at least, or are you planning any more additions?

The ones here are pretty similar to our new ghostly-looking babies. And maybe, maybe not. I’ve talked to D about getting two Salmon Faverolles, fantastic birds, and he’s calling me Noah from now on. :-)

It depends when we can get the shed we want for them, as right now I have to clean out the hen-house every two days because it’s packed–not overcrowded, just packed. The lady we buy from has two of the incredibly exotic Faverolles available but they’re too small right now, they won’t be suitable for at least another 3-4 weeks. She’d be happy to reserve them as ours, but until I know I’ve got a shed for them, there’s no point doing so.

There’s plenty of room for them all to sleep in the current hen-house, but they really could do with more space and so we want considerably more space: we’re looking at getting a double-door shed when we can afford it!

It’d be MUCH easier to clean, walk-in, walk-out, easier to air, and better for the birds. Better for my back, too. It really is a bitch to clean out, stupidly designed to be pretty but not remotely practical.

I’d also not be having to clean the proposed shed every other day, but doing so with the current hen-house makes it a less messy job and fairly quick–about 15 minutes of my time.

Cleaning it out after a week uncleaned, however, would be a whole different prospect–a two-hour job at least. Or after heavy rain, as last week. It was, oh, nasty! But the fruit bushes will like what they got out of it… :-)

I will post pics of the newcomers ASAP. Right now they’re spending most of the daytime on Day One in the Big Chicken house hiding under the giant ornamental grass, but they’re friendly towards me and getting enough food and water, so I’m leaving them be to adjust to their new home.

None have yet to be ejected for spitting. :-) x

But 12 would be the absolute limit. When all are egg-producing next spring, we will have an abundance of eggs for ourselves, and to sell. But AmethystDragon and I are thinking of rearing our own birds from next year, which will be cheaper and a lot of fun to watch them being mothered and growing up. x
