Spiritualists predict trouble as UK government targets their religion

Friday, April 18th, 2008

If Jesus Christ ever does return—as his followers believe, though personally under the new law I’d presumably be able to demand a timetable and memo from the Lord Himself, just to confirm everything as being factually real and not fiction—then we can be certain it wouldn’t be long before he was banged up for making claims of miracles and, yes, faith healing. He wouldn’t be crucified but he would be rubbished in the mainstream media, which is a kind of death nobody ever returns from (at least not yet—keep an eye on Britney Spears, though, she may yet buck the trend).

Of course if GPs and the pharmaceutical industry had to prove that the pills they give us to take actually do what they’re supposed to, consistently, every single time we take them, then we’d really have something interesting to swallow. But of course we take conventional medicine and science on face value, usually having no understanding whatsoever of what’s involved in making them, or how they work on the body or mind.

Yes, we take science and medical practitioners on faith. We do. We’re told we can trust them, that their medicine is Real and Good. But few of us have the scientific and orthodox medical knowledge to begin to assess the claims made by drug companies and those in their pay. So what do we tend to do? We embrace convention and orthodoxy without thought; we ridicule the unorthodox and unconventional, again without much in the way of thought.

Crazy eh! I think it is ok to insure “hired psychics” use a disclaimer such as “for entertainment purposes only” but to go after an entire religion? Here in Canada they ask for no more than any other church such as a collection box etc. How does one prove what they believe? It is unfortunate that so many charlatans have spoiled the public’s view, but is that not true of all major religions. Good though provoking post as always :)
