Self-hosted WordPress blogs have one particularly useful weapon against persistent offenders. The .htaccess file located on your server can be set to block not only splogs that repeatedly steal your content but also other offensive sites that link to yours–for example, racist blogs.

Simply add the following at the top of the file:

SetEnvIfNoCase Referer bahamas23.info/ spammer=yes

The example above uses a real splog that has been nicking my content for weeks now. The anti-splog plugins seem utterly incapable of blacklisting it, despite each of them claiming to allow you to input domains and blacklist them.

For this to work you have to use the entire domain, e.g. example. com and always with a forward slash afterwards, like so: example.com/.

That said, if it’s a blog hosted by, say, Blogger, you can use nameofsiteyouwanttoblock.blogspot.com. Take care–you don’t want to block ALL Blogger sites from accessing your content legitimately!

I’m going to make extensive use of the .htaccess file from now on, blocking each and every splog that comes this way by adding it into the file as and when. x
