The guy who doesn’t cook is cooking
While I can rustle up a mean stir-fry, basic pasta dish, or salad, I don’t do much else in the kitchen but recently decided that was going to change, big time. And so I went to the shops today armed with a list of ingredients for the dinner I’m making my beloved tonight. It’s a proper, full-on meal.
D is a great cook, and his kitchen time in the evenings is his way of unwinding from work, so I’ve long been reluctant to even try invading the space. He cooks, I wash up. That’s the usual deal, and it’s what we’ve both wanted and been happy with for nearly ten years. I always offer to help, whether it’s peeling spuds or grating cheese, but nine times out of ten the offer is politely turned down but nevertheless appreciated.
Tonight will be different. For the first time since cookery classes at school I’m making everything from scratch, with no well-intentioned interference or advice from my partner. He’s going to be served goat’s cheese fettucini with herb butter for the main course, and a citrus crush for dessert made from oranges, limes and grapefruit with caster sugar and ice. Both dishes look relatively simple to prepare.
