1986: Su Pollard sings at the wedding
If you think reality TV shows are a 21st Century phenomenon on our TV screens, think again. Some of you may recall the BBC documentary series called The Marriage. Broadcast in 1986 it followed a young couple’s marriage plans from getting engaged to the traditional church wedding.
The series was both hugely popular and incredibly bland.
Su Pollard, the comedy actor best known for her roles in sitcoms Hi-De-Hi and You Rang, M’Lord? somehow found herself recording Starting Together, the theme song for the series. The only problem was, with the greatest of respect for her comic talents, Su Pollard just couldn’t sing very well. Her efforts weren’t exactly dire—she wasn’t tone-deaf—but her lacklustre vocals certainly weren’t helped by the clichéd lyrics about love and marriage, or the disastrously pedestrian musical accompaniment on the single which nevertheless got to number two in the UK pop charts.

It was, it has to be said, for all its many faults, catchy. And everyone who was getting married that year either bought the song or had it bought for them.
