The last weekend of my thirties

was spent
in the company of my beloved
lover, pets—among them
a newly three-legged cat,

and key family members—
mother, father,
two older sisters—
who double up as mums.

Saturday, I smiled
at all the love received.
Sunday, I finalised
a reply to prejudicial crimes.

It was not the weekend I imagined
it might be
one day a long way back from here
when I wondered if I’d get to forty.

Saturday
was a day for celebrations.
Sunday proved
a day for curious revelations.

Whatever else was going on,
I chose to unwind. The weekend,
over too soon. My life,
most definitely not over at all.
