Maybe dirty iBook gives pause for thought

My white iBook has been broken for about three years. Over the weekend I dug it out and discovered it will boot okay but needs a new CD, CD-R or SuperDrive (CD-R/DVD) installed (for reasons unknown to me, this particular model can’t have a DVD-RW fitted). It also needs a new keyboard as the ‘delete’ key is busted. What that says about my approach to writing during the peak of my copywriting and editorial days in the big smoke, I couldn’t possibly imagine. Did I mention my right middle finger has ‘delete’ embossed on it backwards?

I contacted an Apple authorised repair shop in Leeds with an enquiry as to how much they’d want to fix it. It was only afterwards that I discovered the parts I need can be bought through eBay and, if I’m clever, for less than twenty quid in total. Heck, if you’re lucky you can pick up a complete old iBook for under £80 (that’s roughly $150). The problem is, I mentioned to D last night that when I emailed the shop for a quote, they wrote back straightaway asking for the iBook’s serial number. I gave it. I haven’t heard anything back. D raised the frightening prospect: what if it’s stolen?
