Poem: Decorating
There's something about decorating.
Take any room. We took the kitchen.
With deft application of a knife edge,
we opened the tins like Quality Street.
White paint eyed us in perfect stillness,
the lid a pool inspiring questions, doubt.
Will it work? Let's try it. Like strong mints,
let's suck it and see if change, some say,
is as good as a rest.
We wanted a holiday.
Blue paint was waiting for us, unopened
for the second stage. Primer to be used.
Two whites. I couldn't tell the difference.
Each had purpose defined on the labels.
Bold strokes of brushes covered over sin,
the nicotined remnants of former tenants,
ugly choices determined by dodgy tastes.
Yellow gave way to white without any fight.
Black cat dream
There’s a black cat which has been bothering both the human and feline members of our household for some time now.
It’s a beautiful but unneutered male. The cat doesn’t start any fights but it pees up against the back door, all over the garden and, when the opportunity to sneak in presents itself, on the carpets and kitchen floor. The thing is, if it wasn’t for the pee we wouldn’t mind the visits. Our cats don’t take issue with the stranger at all, or rather they don’t fight but they clearly get unsettled when the stranger comes to call.
