Fears for other children after witchcraft abuse conviction

According to a BBC News report, hundreds of central African children living in the UK may have suffered abuse or even been killed after being accused of Witchcraft, charities say. The warning follows the conviction of three people over the torture of an eight-year-old girl.

The senior hierarchies of all the Christian churches should band together and unite under a single statement condemning the practice of accusing children of Witchcraft and going on to abuse, torture and murder them. The Pope could set a profoundly impactful example by declaring to the world that it is wrong to torture and abuse anyone for any reason, including resulting from accusations or suspicions of Witchcraft.

If that weren’t enough, surely the threat of eternal damnation in a fiery Hell could be used against these wicked, superstitious people.

I wouldn’t normally advocate fear as a control mechanism—it’s pretty appalling—but when children are involved and at risk, I don’t give a damn so long as they are safe and protected. We must work together as a global community, putting aside any divisions and differences of belief, to end these terrors and crimes against children.

Part of that work must involve calm open recognition that Paganism, certainly every tradition I am remotely familiar with, is entirely benign and peace-loving.
