Finding poetry

There are two anthologies which I recommend to anyone seeking a deeper understanding and appreciation of contemporary poetry. They are both published by Bloodaxe Books, the first being Staying Alive and the second, Being Alive. A third companion volume is due to be published in 2006. These anthologies seek to cut through the academic fuzz that surrounds discussion of poetry and effectively ensures most people keep it at arm’s length and identify it as elitist when it truly isn’t. Poetry is perhaps the most democratic of all forms of literary and artistic expression.

Poem: Shipwrecked

I am shipwrecked.
I would like not to be
but cannot see
how I can be
anything else.

I had a world yesterday;
today, I have dust
and broken promises.
